Why this site exists
Most softener advice treats a city as one number. Madison isn't one number. Where the numbers come from
Water figures come from Madison Water Utility's FAQ, its 2025 annual water quality report and its per-well reports. Salt and chloride notes come from the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District. Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau, and rules are quoted from Wisconsin statutes and the state plumbing code.
